THE REFORMATION: ~To counter the spread of Protestantism, the Vatican invented the concept of propaganda as a way of communicating Catholic doctrine to the people. THE FRENCH REVOLUTION: ~ Revolutionary forces came up with slogans, potent symbols and the greatest song in history: La Marseillaise WORLD WAR I: ~ The British Government persuaded millions of men to volunteer and saw the creation of the famous Lord Kitchener 'Your country needs you' poster. --- one of the most-copied propaganda images ever. NAZI GERMANY: ~Adolf Hitler and his propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels maintained their hold on the German population and terrified surrounding nations into submission. Both the news and escapist entertainment helped to indoctrinate the masses. THE COLD WAR: ~ From the campaign to support the Marshall plan, which cemented the Western alliance in he 1940s to the 1980s when media such as Voice of America radio successfully challenged the Soviet system, US propaganda was the decisive factor in winning the Cold War.
